NEW YORK (AP) — Some library branches in New York City will be renovated and others will remain open later thanks to a $43 million increase in funds to city libraries.
The New York Public Library says Thursday it's increasing hours at the branches it operates in the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island.
Beginning this week, four libraries in Manhattan and the Bronx will be open on Sundays.
On average, branches will be open for about 50 hours each week.
The library says the funding will also be used to hire an additional 100 librarians and public service staffers and buy new books.
New York City has also committed to providing $300 million to the library system for repairs over 10 years.
A portion of the funding will help renovate five branches.
