HOUSTON (AP) — The Texas Education Agency is recommending that a school district in a small South Texas border town dissolve its board of trustees.
The Monitor in McAllen (http://bit.ly/1JDG9x7 ) reports that the agency last week released findings from an investigation into the Progreso school district that started in 2013. The report says the violations uncovered "indicate a widespread and systematic breakdown."
The agency recommends that Education Commissioner Michael Williams appoint a board of managers to replace the district's trustees and downgrade its accreditation. A TEA spokeswoman says there's no deadline for the commissioner's decision.
Board President Juan Ramos says the board has been working to get the district back on track.
The investigation was prompted by a corruption scandal involving several family members involved in the district, including the former board president.
