AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Students are raising complaints after the University of Akron moved to collect fall semester tuition payments earlier in the summer and doubled fines for late payments.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1KPs8wp ) the university's board of trustees voted to move up tuition payment deadlines to give housing, dining services and professors a more accurate count of students who will actually attend classes instead of dropping out before the first day.

School officials claim the changes to late fees have nothing to do with the university's present budgetary issues.

Students who registered before Aug. 1 must settle their bills by Aug. 10 instead of the first day of classes. If students registered after Aug. 1, the old rules still apply.

The university says they have sent out reminders of the deadline.
