BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho State Police officials say the state is currently a spike in traffic fatalities compared to the same time period last year.
The Idaho Statesman (http://bit.ly/1JVY9A4 ) reports that ISP trooper responded to 45 traffic fatalities from Memorial Day weekend through July 29. The amount is more 60 percent higher compared to the 28 fatalities ISP investigated during the same time frame in 2014.
ISP spokeswoman Teresa Baker says many of this year's causes are still under investigation, but the most common culprit so far has been speeding, distracted riving and failure to wear a seatbelt.
Idaho's interstate speed limits increased to 80 mph last year. However, officials say data from the past 12 months has not shown an increase in fatalities.
