EVANS, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities in western New York say a 51-year-old woman drowned while trying to rescue her 11-year-old daughter and another girl from the rough waters of Lake Erie.

Police in the town of Evans say the daughter and a 10-year-old girl were in the water at Wendt Beach just after 7 p.m. Thursday when they started struggling in the high waves. Officials say that's when Mary Creighton of Buffalo went in after them, but she soon went underwater.

Authorities say a police lieutenant and bystander pulled the girls from the water, but Creighton drowned. Both girls were conscious and alert when they were taken to a hospital.

Creighton's body was later found by emergency crews.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz says swimming isn't allowed at the county-owned beach.

This story has been corrected to show the second girl's age as 10 instead of 11.
