HOLLISTER, Calif. (AP) — A man has been arrested in the central California city of Hollister on suspicion of setting off fireworks at a July Fourth block party, sending at least five people to the hospital.

A police statement said 35-year-old Shawn Gregory Bourdet was arrested at the scene of the explosion Saturday night and told officers he was responsible for what happened.

Police said a lit mortar fell over and shot projectiles into a crowd, hitting several people who were at the outdoor block party.

A child was flown to a San Francisco Bay area hospital with severe injuries, several children suffered moderate to severe burns and one person had a possible broken leg.

Police said Bourdet was cooperating with investigators.
