BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho health officials say a bat found in Boise has tested positive for rabies.
KBOI-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1LIFkF3 ) that this is the first rabid bat of 2015.
Last year, 11 bats and one skunk tested positive for rabies. Two cases were in Ada County and two were in Canyon County.
Central District Health Department epidemiologist Sarah Correll says bats are the main source of rabies exposures in Idaho and they receive reports of rabid bats every year.
Correll encourages parents to talk to their children about the importance of not touching bats or other wild animals.
She says unusual behavior in bats, such as daytime activity, usually indicates that the bat may carry rabies.
Public health officials say to make sure that all pet vaccinations are up-to-date.
