HARBOR SPRINGS, Mich. (AP) — Concerns about dog flu are keeping a group of dachshunds from participating in a Fourth of July parade in northern Michigan.
Group organizer Carol Tippett says she decided to keep the dogs out of this year's parade in Harbor Springs to guard them from the spread of canine influenza. Cases of dog flu have been confirmed in Michigan, and Tippett says dachshunds have come from all over the U.S. for the parade.
The dachshunds have been in the parade for the past 12 years. Tippett says she hopes the dogs will be able to participate next year.
Canine flu makes pets feel unwell for about two weeks. The virus is passed through the air when dogs sneeze or when it gets on human hands or clothing. It doesn't sicken people.
