ECORSE, Mich. (AP) — The 95-year-old Wayne County library system is coming to an end as it transitions its remaining two libraries into municipal ones.
The Detroit Free Press reports (http://on.freep.com/1JuaZYL ) libraries in the Detroit suburbs of Ecorse and Taylor cease operating as county libraries Wednesday.
The county system served 28 cities and townships as recently as 1981 but saw its membership dwindle. Five library systems left in 2014.
Cash-strapped Wayne County is seeking to reorganize its operations and cut costs.
The future of the Wayne County Braille and Talking Book Library is unclear. The newspaper says it will close as of Wednesday, but the county's Library Director Maria McCarville says the state will offer services to patrons, at least temporarily.
The Braille and Talking Book Library could be relocated to the Taylor library.
