COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Teachers from across the state and the nation who are looking for jobs in South Carolina public schools are expected to attend a jobs fair at the state fairgrounds in Columbia.

The state Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement is organizing the event, and it says Friday's event is one of the largest of its type in South Carolina.

The center says that retaining teachers in South Carolina classrooms is a major issue.

According to the center, 5,300 teachers who were teaching in the state's public schools last year did not return to the classroom. That compares with an average of only about 2,200 teachers who complete a South Carolina education program each year.
