EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State University's College of Engineering has received a $5 million commitment to create scholarships and fellowships for students.
The East Lansing school says the gift will establish the Gary A. and Patricia A. Coffman Endowed Scholarship/Fellowship and include a discretionary fund for the dean.
Gary Coffman graduated in 1974 from Michigan State with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He spent 31 years with Dow Corning. He retired in 2005 as plant manager for the Dow Corning facility in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.
Coffman says "one of the key things in the engineering field is to establish an environment for others to leverage their capabilities" and that he hopes to "impact students with this gift."
The College of Engineering has 4,900 undergraduate and more than 800 graduate students.
