BETHESDA, Md. (AP) — A Virginia man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for having unprotected sex with two women in Maryland without telling them he was HIV positive.
Twenty-eight-year-old Daniel Cleaves of Richmond was sentenced in Montgomery County Circuit Court following an emotional hearing Monday. He had pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment earlier this month.
Cleaves wept during the hearing, saying that what he did was wrong and that he was sorry.
His defense attorney, Andrew Jezic, had asked that Cleaves be released and given credit for the three months he's been jailed since his arrest.
The women involved in the case haven't tested positive for HIV. Jezic says his client was on a drug that made his chances of transmitting the virus through intercourse "next to zero."
