SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Most people living in urban Utah have access to high-speed internet, but that access rate drops substantially for residents in rural areas.

Data released last month by the Federal Communications Commission shows that only 2 percent of the 2.6 million people who live in urban parts of Utah have no access to high-speed Internet service.

That's the 15th best rate in the country.

But nearly 39 percent of the 268,000 living in the outskirts have no access, putting Utah 17th in the ranking.

Besides the lag, many rural areas and some smaller cities also have no backup systems.

That vulnerability ATMs went down, stores couldn't process credit cards, college students put research on hold, and even 911 emergency service was lost.
