TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) — Police say the driver of a pickup truck that went onto a frozen New Jersey river and then plunged through the ice into the water has turned himself in. They say a passenger who got out just before the truck went onto the river also has surrendered.
The men are being questioned and could face criminal charges including for the death of a dog inside the truck.
A witness called Toms River police Sunday morning to report a small truck had just driven onto the frozen river. Responding officers saw the truck, but it disappeared into the water soon after.
A Coast Guard helicopter crew responded. A rescue swimmer lowered to the river soon spotted the truck.
State police were notified. A rescue effort involving several agencies was launched and found the dog inside the truck.
