RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy says he's using a cross-country listening tour to understand how communities are addressing public health issues in their areas.
Murthy met with community stakeholders, faith leaders, public health officials and others on Tuesday at a Richmond clinic that serves the homeless community.
In December, the U.S. Senate approved Murthy's nomination despite opposition from Republicans and some Democrats over his support for gun control and past statements that gun violence is a public health issue.
The 37-year-old Murthy is a physician at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital and instructor at Harvard Medical School.
The son of immigrants from India is a co-founder of Doctors for America, a group that has pushed for affordable health care and supports Obama's health care law.
