TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was among the hundreds of cyclists who completed an annual bike ride in Tucson.

The Arizona Daily Star reports (http://bit.ly/1vwkmDr) that Giffords rode across the finish line in a El Tour de Tucson cycling ride Saturday morning.

In an email, Giffords says she has worked hard to get back on her bike.

The Tucson native rode with her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, and a friend in the 12-mile fun ride.

Kelly told KGUN-TV (http://bit.ly/1ushjVP ) that his wife wants to do a 40-mile ride next year.

KGUN says more than 8,000 riders showed up for the races, which include courses of various distances.

Giffords, who was critically wounded in the 2011 Tucson mass shooting, has been training on a recumbent bicycle for six months.
