ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) — A Utah man accused in a deadly assault at a family gathering in St. George has pleaded guilty to murder.
The Spectrum reports (http://bit.ly/ZORmbs ) 33-year-old Mario Alfonso Lucero's case unexpectedly wrapped up Wednesday when he accepted a plea deal. It drops assault and property damage charges stemming from incident that left 31-year-old Jeramy Shawn Olsen dead.
Judge G. Michael Westfall sentenced Lucero to 15 years to life in prison.
Olsen suffered serious head injuries in an apparent attempt to defend his common law wife, Desiree Haley, and her mother from a beating the gathering in February 2013.
Haley and Lucero are siblings.
Olsen was flown to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, where he died from significant head injuries.
Lucero was arrested in California.
