WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) — Waukegan's teachers strike has resulted in a sharp rise in the number of children using the Boys and Girls Club of Lake County.
Boys and Girls Club CEO Cesilie Price tells WBBM-AM that because of the limited number of staff members, the club has been forced to turn away children. Price says the club currently provides a place and three meals daily for 120 students affected by the strike. They range from ages six to 18.
About 17,000 students have been out of class since teachers walked out on Oct. 2.
Spokesman Larry Larsen says the school district's current offer is a fair one and blames the teachers union for the impasse. Waukegan Teachers' Council president Kathy Schwarz accuses the district of not working hard enough for an agreement.
