ANSON, Maine (AP) — Three cases of whooping cough have been confirmed at an Anson elementary school and district officials have organized a public meeting to discuss prevention and response measures.
Parents and others are invited to a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Carrabec High School, where representatives from the Maine Center for Disease Control will discuss whooping cough prevention.
Superintendent Ken Coville tells the Morning Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1wnZkmy ) all three cases were reported at the Garret Schenck School.
Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a respiratory infection characterized by uncontrollable coughing that make a "whooping" sound and can induce vomiting or cause difficulty breathing. Other symptoms include sneezing, a runny nose and fever.
The state CDC says there have been 339 cases of whooping cough confirmed in Maine this year.
