DETROIT (AP) — A group dedicated to preserving the history of Detroit Catholic schools plans to showcase a memorabilia collection in Livonia.
The Detroit Catholic Schools Heritage Project will display yearbooks, letter sweaters, school mascots and photos at a building near Ladywood High School, the Detroit Free Press (http://on.freep.com/1Fq7alJ ) reported. It also plans to create a replica classroom with items from past and present Detroit-area Catholic schools.
Students from Ladywood and Madonna University can help catalog and build the collection on the shared campus operated by the Felician nuns, according to Michael Butler, a Livonia attorney and Detroit Catholic Central High School graduate.
The heritage group will meet for its fourth annual Mass and awards dinner Wednesday at St. Clare of Montefalco parish. The event will celebrate several local Catholic school officials.
The Detroit Catholic Schools Heritage Project is also known as the Bishop Michael J. Gallagher Society, in honor of a Detroit Catholic bishop who presided over several schools in the 1920s.
