RENO, Nev. (AP) — A Nevada teacher killed by a 12-year-old student in a schoolyard shooting a year ago was honored on Sunday.

Michael Landsberry was posthumously awarded the U.S. Air Force's Airman's Medal and the National Guard Association of the United States' Valley Forge Cross for Heroism.

His widow, Sharon Landsberry, accepted the awards during a ceremony in Reno.

Police say the 45-year-old Landsberry tried to talk the shooter into turning over the handgun before he was shot in the chest Oct. 21, 2013 at Sparks Middle School. The student wounded two classmates before taking his life.

Landsberry, an ex-Marine, became the first Nevada Guard airman to receive the Airman's Medal. It's reserved for U.S. or allied service members who distinguish themselves by voluntary, non-combat heroic actions at the risk of life.
