WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) — The school superintendent in Waukegan says there will be no classes after teachers went on strike in the Chicago suburb.
Waukegan Community Unit School District No. 60 said on its website that there would be no school Thursday. Officials with the Lake County Federation of Teachers say teachers went on strike Thursday morning at about two dozen campuses. The district serves about 17,000 students.
District 60 leaders and the union were in negotiations throughout Wednesday. Both sides said they hoped a strike could be avoided before the Thursday deadline.
Salary, health care and employment conditions are at issue in negotiations.
The district says the Waukegan Park District, Waukegan Public Library and the Boys and Girls Club are offering childcare and programming.
