NORTHFIELD, Vt. (AP) — Norwich University has kicked off a $100 million, five-year fundraising campaign more than halfway to the goal that organizers hope to reach by the time of the Northfield school's bicentennial in 2019.
Norwich President Richard Schneider formally kicked off the "Forging the Future" campaign on Friday during the school's homecoming weekend.
It is Norwich's largest fundraising campaign and it began with Norwich's largest single donation, a $25 million gift in April from a donor who challenged others to donate as well.
The school says it has already raised $55 million of the total.
The money will be used for a new, six-story academic building on campus, and to renovate other buildings, increase the size of the scholarship endowments and modernize the campus library.
"The money raised will be used to enhance the teaching and learning environments on our campus, so that when our graduates leave Norwich, they will be equipped to meet the challenges of the 21st century," Schneider said.
Norwich bills itself as the nation's oldest private military college and is the birthplace of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps. It also has a civilian student body.
