LAS VEGAS (AP) — A 38-year-old Las Vegas man has been ordered to life in prison without the possibility of parole for killing a 4-month-old baby with a medieval-style battle ax and critically wounding the child's mother in a random attack on a sidewalk.

Harold Eugene Montague was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty but mentally ill in May to first-degree murder with a deadly weapon, attempted murder and battery on a police officer.

Damian Avila Castro was killed, and his mother, Sandra Castro, was gravely injured in the random, February 2010 sidewalk attack. The mother had been pushing her baby in a stroller and headed to the store.

Montague also stabbed his disabled sister-in-law, Monica O'Dazier, multiple times inside their home before bursting outside.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports Montague offered a brief apology at Wednesday's hearing.
