LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — A program that teaches defensive driving to young motorists has reached a milestone in a central Kentucky county.
The Fayette County Attorney Driver Education Program on Wednesday graduated its 500th participant in four years of operation.
The program's sponsors include private backers, the Fayette County attorney and the city of Lexington.
Lexington Mayor Jim Gray says there are 1,500 collisions in Lexington each year involving young drivers. He says the program is making young drivers and the roads safer.
County Attorney Larry Roberts says the program's goal is to ensure students know the basic operation of a vehicle and how to react to a variety of situations they may encounter while driving.
The program is designed for new, licensed drivers who have logged at least 20 hours behind the wheel.
