HERKIMER, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities are trying to determine the cause of death for a junior college soccer star who collapsed inside his upstate New York apartment.
Officials at Herkimer County Community College say 22-year-old Peter McAvoy of Dundee, Scotland collapsed around 6 p.m. Saturday at his apartment on the campus of the Mohawk Valley school. Athletic Director Donald Dutcher says McAvoy was unresponsive and was taken to Little Falls Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Dutcher says a cause of death has yet to be determined, and that an autopsy is being scheduled.
McAvoy was an All-American and captain at Herkimer, where Dutcher says the defender was one of the most popular students.
The Generals have won three consecutive national junior college championships, with McAvoy playing major roles in the last two.
