OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) — Growth in west Jackson County has led to expansion at Ocean Springs Hospital, where a $16.5 million renovation project is now complete.

The renovations include expansion of the pre-surgical and post-operation areas and the relocation of the heart failure clinic to that tower where there is more patient capacity, Hospital Administrator Heath Thompson told The Sun Herald (http://bit.ly/1oLF2NQ ).

On the second floor, 20 new state-of-the-art patient beds were added, bringing the capacity to 156. The third floor, though not currently in use, is available for future growth.

"This is a great addition for us, for our patients, employees, medical staff and the community as a whole," Thompson said.

Ocean Springs is a growing community and it's not uncommon for the hospital to be at full capacity, he said.

The renovations were funded through bonds and took about two years.

Singing River Hospital, about 20 miles east in Pascagoula, is undergoing about $30 million in upgrades on the exterior and the first three floors of its east wing. Of that amount, $17 million is from a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant to upgrade windows and the exterior.

Both hospitals are part of Singing River Health System, which recently announced it is closing clinics in east Pascagoula, Gautier and D'Iberville.
