LAS VEGAS (AP) — Police are investigating a fatal shooting during a party in an opulent penthouse suite with stunning views of the Las Vegas Strip. Authorities say a man was hospitalized with a gunshot to the chest and later died after police were called after 9 last night to the Fantasy Tower at the Palms Hotel and Casino. Police tell the Las Vegas Sun the shooting took place while dozens of people were in the Sky Villa atop the tower.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada's unemployment rate fell to 8 percent in April, dropping one-half of a percentage point from the previous month and marking the biggest decline in three decades. State labor officials said today Nevada employers added 3,000 jobs in April, the ninth consecutive month of job gains and 39th consecutive monthly increase on a year-over-year basis.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A former Las Vegas Strip dancer sobbed and described for jurors how his ex-girlfriend died in his arms during a heated argument at his house in 2010. Jason Omar Griffith said in court yesterday that he grabbed Deborah Flores Narvaez from behind as he fell backward to defend himself. Prosecutors will question Griffith today about differences between what he told the jury and denials he gave police before Flores' dismembered body was found in January 2011.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Southern Nevada's primary terrorism preparedness program is getting a boost in federal funding. Nevada's Homeland Security Commission has approved a grant allocation plan that will increase funding for the region's fusion center to nearly $1.1 million, up from $750,000 this year. The Review-Journal reports Las Vegas was ranked too low on a threat assessment list to receive federal funding in the current federal budget, a move that brought swift criticism from Nevada officials.
