RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - The publisher of the Orange County Register is buying The Press-Enterprise of Riverside.

The deal, worth $27 million, was announced Thursday by the Register's parent company, Freedom Communications Inc., and Dallas-based A.H. Belo Corp., which owns The Press-Enterprise.

Under the deal expected to close in mid-October, Freedom Communications will acquire the newspaper, production facility and land.

It's the latest acquisition for Freedom Communications Chief Executive Aaron Kushner, who bought the Register a year ago.

Headquartered in Orange County, privately held Freedom Communications publishes four daily newspapers.

In August, the company launched the Long Beach Register to compete with the Long Beach Press-Telegram, founded more than a century ago.
