CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Some Western Carolina University graduates are unhappy that the school is included in a plan to reduce tuition to $500 per semester for in-state students.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reported (http://avlne.ws/293SE9K ) some Western Carolina grads are worried about a budget provision being voted on in Raleigh that would affect the school, UNC Pembroke and Elizabeth City State University.
Sen. Tom Apodaca of Henderson County says he's trying to help the schools.
Some Western Carolina graduates worry about an expected increase in students attracted by lower tuition. They worry the school's reputation would be affected.
The alumni also worry the state won't keep its promise to cover the rest of the cost in future years.
Businessman and 1960 graduate Tobe Childers says no one has explained why Western Carolina was included.
