SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Two northern Nevada-based companies have agreed to pay federal environmental regulators a $12,000 penalty to settle a dispute over the improper sale of pesticides.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the settlement Tuesday with the Sparks-based WellPlant Inc. and its affiliate, GST International Inc.

The EPA issued a "stop sale" order in December to prevent further distribution of the product, "Mold Manager."

The agency says the product that purports to prevent, destroy or repel mold, mildew, algae and moss was unregistered and misbranded.

It says "Mold Manager" was sold with labels that featured misleading statements and failed to list the percentages of active ingredients.

The EPA says a follow-up inspection earlier this month by the Nevada Department of Agriculture confirmed the companies' remaining inventory of the product was safely disposed of.
