SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Debate over whether to tax tampons and other feminine hygiene products has made its way to conservative Utah, where a bill is set to be heard by a committee made of only men. Some say governments that make money this way penalize women for their biology -- at least five U.S. states have dumped taxes on such products.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Senate has given preliminary approval to a plan offering optional training to middle school students on what to do if they encounter a weapon or if a gunman enters their school. The Republican sponsor of the bill says not all parents may know how to talk to their kids about gun safety. If schools or districts choose to offer the class, parents would have to give consent for their child to take part.

OGDEN, Utah (AP) — A report shows that Zion National Park is about $70 million behind on maintenance work, while continuing to see a record number of visitors. The Standard-Examiner reports that the report identified increased visitation and transportation issues as key challenges for Zion, which set a new attendance record in 2015 with 3.6 million visitors.

LOGAN, Utah (AP) — Chris Smith scored 19 points, including 7 of 8 free throws, and Utah State beat New Mexico 80-72 last night, ending a five-game skid. Lew Evans added 15 points, Jalen Moore 11 and the Aggies made 21 of 28 free throws. Quinn Taylor grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds. It was the Lobos first loss in Logan since 1962.
