LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Las Vegas man accused of staging car crashes and defrauding insurance companies of more than $10,000 has pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him.
The Las Vegas Sun reports (http://bit.ly/1N7W1Z4 ) that 26-year-old Martin Curiel-Guerra has been charged with one count of multiple transactions involving fraud or deceit.
Curiel-Guerra claimed to be the driver in three staged crashes and enabled co-conspirators to make false insurance claims between May and June of 2012. His plot cost Nationwide Insurance Co., Sentry Insurance Co., the city of Henderson, and Nevada Highway Patrol more than $10,000.
To stage a car crash, drivers position their cars strategically to create collisions with unsuspecting drivers. The driver will then claim to have been injured.
Sentencing for Curiel-Guerra has been set for Dec. 1.
