MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — The Vermont Agency of Agriculture is urging the state's poultry producers to prepare for the arrival of a disease usually fatal to poultry that is expected to reach the state this fall or next spring.

State Veterinarian Kristin Haas says Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza is not thought to pose a significant threat to humans and infected poultry does not constitute a food safety risk.

The virus is most commonly spread by infected waterfowl.

The virus is usually fatal for domestic poultry.

Risk factors include poultry housed outside, ponds or other waterfowl on the farm, piles of debris near poultry areas and the movement of poultry between farms.

Other risks include lack of personal protective equipment for workers such as dedicated coveralls and boots and the sharing of equipment between farms.
