SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — A $23,000 project is testing the waters of Hayden Lake to see how effective man-made wetlands are at improving water quality. The Spokesman Review reports Kootenai Environmental Alliance's executive director says the floating wetlands are part of the solution to Hayden Lake's phosphorous problems. The wetland project could become a prototype for other lakes in the region if it is successful.

MULLAN, Idaho (AP) — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Justice have reached an agreement with the owner of Idaho's Lucky Friday Mine and Mill concerning water pollution violations near the headwaters of the South Fork Coeur d'Alene River. Hecla Limited will pay a $600,000 penalty as part of the settlement involving close to 500 pollution violations. Hecla's violations include effluent limit violations and unpermitted discharges to the river.

MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) — The owner of Syringa Mobile Home Park is asking tenants to continue paying rent despite rumors that he may be putting the property up for sale. The Moscow-Pullman Daily News reports Magar E. Magar is facing a lawsuit brought against him by Syringa residents after they were without proper water and sewer services for more than 90 days in 2013. Magar has been fined as a result of the case.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — The longtime operator of one of the largest coal-fueled power plants in the West has completed a spin-off of assets that include the 2,000-megawatt Colstrip Generating Station in southeastern Montana. Pennsylvania-based PPL Corp. has announced it had spun off subsidiary PPL Montana and assets elsewhere as the company seeks to focus on more reliable markets.
