AMITE, La. (AP) — The Tangipahoa School Board says it will not stand in the way of a charter school planning to open in Hammond this fall.
The Advocate reports (http://bit.ly/1JWZTwE ) the school board announced Wednesday it will not oppose the school, as long as it does not affect the district's desegregation goals or deplete local tax funds.
In August, the Tangipahoa Charter School Association received approval to start Tangi Academy, a school for prekindergarten through eighth grades. It is seeking permission to begin operating this fall.
Officials from the association say the school will draw a diverse student population.
School Board President Brett Duncan says the board wants to protect its tax funds and will not oppose Tangi Academy unless the district has to pay the school a standard per-student funding amount.
