SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Federal prosecutors have filed fraud and conspiracy charges against six people accused of taking more than $33 million from thousands of people trying to save their homes from foreclosure.

Prosecutors alleged in a 40-count indictment announced Friday that telemarketers for a Utah-based company called CC Brown targeted struggling homeowners around the country to sell bogus home loan modification services at the height of the mortgage crisis.

Prosecutors say people who bought the services heard nothing from the company for months as they continued getting calls from creditors and some lost their homes while waiting for help from the company.

Defense attorney Brett Tolman says CC Brown was a legitimate law firm, but wasn't always successful. He says the firm cooperated with the investigation for three years, and will be looking closely at the evidence.
