SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Department of Transportation has unveiled plans for highway construction projects across the state this year, including a $252 million project to rebuild and widen a section of Interstate 15 between the Salt Lake City suburbs of Draper and Lehi.

UDOT officials on Friday released a list of the state's top 15 highway projects, saying they're among 180 construction projects planned this year at a cost of nearly $680 million.

"UDOT is investing in major upgrades on our highway system this construction season to keep Utah moving," agency Executive Director Carlos Braceras said, according to KSL (http://bit.ly/1wGiN1x ). "We are constantly innovating and seeking ways to reduce delays and improve traffic flow."

Topping the list is the project to widen I-15 from four lanes to six lanes in each direction around the Point of the Mountain between Draper and Lehi. Plans also call for replacement of some concrete pavement that dates back to the original I-15 in the 1960s. The project is scheduled to begin Monday with completion in fall 2016.

"This is kind of our bottleneck for the valley," Braceras said, according to The Salt Lake Tribune (http://bit.ly/17IXDJQ ). "It's right in the areas that we are seeing incredible growth and development."

Crews this year hope to complete a $126.9 million project to add express lanes and rebuild bridges and interchanges on a section of I-15 in southern Davis County. The project began last year and is scheduled for completion this fall.

A $44 million safety project to widen I-15 in two locations in central and southern Utah to add climbing lanes is scheduled to begin in March with completion in November.

Also high on the list is the $43 million project to repave an 8-mile stretch of Interstate 80 between U.S. 40 and Wanship. The project, which also calls for rebuilding two bridges over I-80, began last year and is scheduled to resume in April with completion this fall.

UDOT officials said motorists should plan ahead and allow extra time when traveling highways targeted for construction projects.
