RENO, Nev. (AP) — The beginning of the end is coming for a historic bridge spanning the Truckee River in downtown Reno. Crews in January are expected to begin removing utility lines that run through the Virginia Street Bridge to prepare for the aging structure's demolition. The bridge, built in 1905, was made famous by divorcees who tossed rings from it into the Truckee when Reno was the world's divorce capital from roughly 1910 to 1970.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Wild-horse advocacy groups are criticizing federal land managers' plans to permanently remove over 750 mustangs from the Nevada range beginning late next month. But the activist groups are split on the Bureau of Land Management's plans to treat as many as 250 mares with a fertility control drug. Some call it a humane alternative to removing horses, while others say it's risky.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (AP) — Organizers expect bigger crowds for this year's SnowGlobe music festival at South Lake Tahoe. The SnowGlobe chief predicts the outdoor event will attract about 14,000 people a day over its three-day run, up from 10,000 people a day last year. The festival at Lake Tahoe Community College begins this afternoon and ends at 1 a.m. New Year's Day.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts has awarded a $50,000 grant to a Carson City arts organization. A Capital City Arts Initiative spokeswoman says the grant will allow the group to continue producing exhibitions and public talks in 2015 and 2016.
