LAS VEGAS (AP) — A new study shows U.S. casinos had a $240 billion economic impact and employed 1.7 million people in 2013. The American Gaming Association announced the results of the economic study at a news conference today. The group's annual G2E Global Gaming Expo kicked off this week at the Sands Expo and Convention Center. Oxford Economics studied the industry's impact and included spending and revenue that might be linked but not directly connected to a casino. An example is a traveler who visits an area for a casino but also spends at a nearby gas station.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Taxable sales in Nevada jumped 6.3 percent in July over the same month a year ago, with big gains in restaurants, bars and electronics sales. Nevada merchants sold $4 billion in taxable goods during the month. Clothing, vehicle and furniture sales were also up over last year. Sales in Clark County shot up 8.8 percent to $2.9 billion. Washoe County posted gains of 6.5 percent, for total sales of $563 million. The state collected $313 million in gross sales and use taxes for July.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Democratic lieutenant governor candidate Lucy Flores criticized Republican Mark Hutchison in a debate in Reno for opposing legislation last year to directly help the Washoe County School District repair its aging, overcrowded schools. The two state lawmakers from Las Vegas fielded questions for a half-hour during an appearance on KRNV-TV's "Nevada Newsmakers" that was taped yesterday and broadcast today. Flores said the money was badly needed and Republicans in the Assembly "punted" on the issue. Hutchison said he supported instead legislation that gave the county authority to raise its own taxes to fix the schools.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Officials say Haze Nightclub at the Aria will be closing at the end of October to make way for another business. MGM Resorts International released a brief statement today confirming the closure of the Las Vegas Strip club, which is located inside the Aria resort. They said a new concept will be moving into the space in 2015, but didn't provide an exact date or description of the plans.
