(AP) — A Nevada trucking company could be forced to pay more than $5.7 million if a judge formalizes a jury verdict that found one of its drivers caused a 2011 crash with an Amtrak train that killed six people and injured dozens. A federal jury found John Davis Trucking negligent for the crash at a rural crossing 70 miles east of Reno.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Forecasters warn that thunderstorms and more flash flooding may be on the way to southern Nevada today. The new storms come as cleanup and repairs continue from floods last week. Officials tallied 139 damaged homes in Moapa, Overton and Logandale and more than $1 million in public road damage in rural Moapa Valley and Sandy Valley areas.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is working to ensure that a nuclear waste dump in his home state of Nevada remains mothballed even though the government has spent $15 billion on it. Reid says, quote, "As long as I'm around there's no Yucca Mountain." The Senate confirmed two nominees to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission yesterday, giving the panel a Democratic majority.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Glass bottles and containers are no longer welcome among the throngs of tourists on Las Vegas Strip sidewalks. Clark County commissioners voted unanimously yesterday to ban glass containers. They say it will reduce the litter and danger of shattered glass on walkways.
