9-year-old boy critically injured by stray pellets
November 7th, 2009 @ 10:54pm

ROY -- Stray pellets from a shotgun hit a 9-year-old boy as he was walking down the street in Roy Saturday afternoon.

Roy police say it happened at 4:55 p.m. near 3800 South and 1900 West. Braden Schroeder and his grandfather were walking home when the shotgun was fired from inside a home.

Chief Greg Whinham of the Roy City Police Department said, "His grandfather was just a little bit ahead of him. As he heard what he described as a loud boom, he turned around to see his grandson had been injured."

Police said the person who fired the shot was cleaning the shotgun when it went off. They were investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the incident.

Chief Whinham said the boy was seriously injured from his neck to his knees. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Weber County prosecutors were expected to screen the case for possible charges Monday.
