HERRIMAN -- The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office has identified a man who drowned in the Blackridge Reservoir Monday night as 22-year-old Marcos R. Menjivar. A dive team located his body after nearly two hours of searching.
Salt Lake County sheriff's Lt. Jake Petersen says Menjivar was swimming with his brother and a friend, and the three were sharing a single inner tube.
When they got about 75 feet from shore, Menjivar started calling for help, and then went under the water.
"I was swimming with my buddy, and I saw the guy go down on the water. And he started to put his hands up, waving in the water, screaming, 'Help! Help! Help!'" said witness Will Hefner.
Menjivar's brother and friend immediately began diving down and searching him, but they could not find him.
The sheriff's office was called, and a dive team spent nearly two hours searching for Menjivar before they were able to locate him. They recovered his body around 8 p.m.
Blackridge Reservoir, located at about 5400 West and 14900 South, is a man-made reservoir that was set to be officially opened one week from Monday.
The lake is a joint venture between Herriman and Riverton. Aside from recreation, it will also supply secondary irrigation water for both cities.
