OGDEN -- Investigators searching for the cause of an apartment fire in Ogden have ruled out foul play. They do not confirm earlier reports that an electrical short is to blame.

Sunday's fire at 2300 Quincy Avenue gutted the building and forced more than 80 people from their homes.

Investigators say they are looking at an electrical short as one possible cause but have not determined that's what started the fire.

Some residents had thought someone barbecuing in a hallway started the blaze, and that a lack of fire extinguishers and smoke alarms allowed it to spread. Fire investigators told the Salt Lake Tribune all of those reports have proven untrue.

The building is considered a total loss.

The Greater Salt Lake Area Chapter of the American Red Cross is taking donations to help those who have been made homeless by the fire.
