SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Some scholars of early Latter-day Saint history have begun a letter-writing campaign in hopes of preserving the job of an archivist who works for the Community of Christ.
Ron Romig, 60, has worked as the lead archivist for the Independence, Mo.-based church since 1988. He says he was told June 15 that his position was being cut for budgetary reasons. Romig will leave the job at the end of August.
Scholars say Romig is an invaluable resource who has helped dozens of historians complete research and books related to the early Latter-day Saint Church and the hundreds of religious movements that sprang from Mormonism after the death of church founder, Joseph Smith, Jr.
A spokeswoman for the Community of Christ says 18 letters written on Romig's behalf have been received so far.
