(KSL News) A group of lawmakers wants to pass a law that would provide mandatory therapy treatment for kids with autism.
Senate Bill 43, or Clay's Law, is named after Clay Whiffen, a boy who developed autism as a toddler. Clay's parents credit a special therapy program for helping their son overcome a violent temper and fear of speech.
But the therapy is expensive, and currently not covered by many insurance providers. "Autism coverage is a must have. It's an issue of equity and fairness for these children," said Sen. Howard Stephenson, R-Salt Lake.
If passed, Clay's Law would require coverage of up to $50,000 a year for children under 9.
