Zion National Park may set visitation record
December 31st, 2008 @ 10:41am

ZION NATIONAL PARK, Utah (AP) -- Zion National Park may set a visitation record this year.

Not including December, the park has had more than 2.6 million visitors in the first 11 months of the year.

The park needs visitation numbers of more than 51,733 in December to surpass the current record of just under 2.7 million visitors set in 2004.

Park spokesman Ron Terry says the park is on track to surpass the record, though bad weather in the last few weeks hasn't helped. Up to six inches of snow fell on the canyon floor.

Terry says the park isn't sure where it stands on December visitation numbers.

Park officials hope visitation remains strong next year as the park holds events to celebrate its 100th anniversary.
