Brigham City is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever started fires at two buildings in that city.

Fire burned the Grist Mill building on Aug. 26 and Merrill's Planing Mill building on Nov. 10.

Right now, investigators have nothing to go on. Brigham City police Lt. Michael Nelson says, "We're really serious about trying to find out who did this. It's something that is real important to us. We're going to find out."

Investigators are doing all they can to find out who is behind the flames. Nelson says, "We're checking gas stations at night to see if people are buying gas in gas cans in the middle of the night because they shouldn't be at 10 o'clock at night."

So far, they've come up short, and they are now asking for the public's help.

There have been six fires so far. The first three happened in the late hours of Aug. 19. Pine trees were the first to burn, then a shed, and then an apartment complex.

The fourth fire was at the Grist Mill, a historic building currently Bott & Sons Monument & Memorial Art Company. Crews had to rescue a woman and her 6-year-old son who were living on the third floor.

The fifth fire was a fifth-wheel trailer and the most recent, on Nov. 10, at Merrell's Planing Mill which is another historic landmark.

Fire authorities think all of the fires were deliberately set and found accelerants at two of them.

Brigham City Mayor Lou Ann Christensen says, "It's a real tragedy for our community. We just have to stop this."

Mayor Christensen hopes the $5,000 reward will help. She says, "We're hoping that anyone with information will come forward, and we will be more than happy to work with them to catch those involved."

Anyone with information should contact the Box Elder Communications Line at 435-734-3800.
