New school in Herriman to relieve overcrowding
July 31st, 2008 @ 4:42pm
By Randall Jeppesen

Relief is on the way for overcrowding at Riverton High School. The Jordan School District is ready to build a new high school in Herriman.

There's been all kinds of growth in Herriman, and talk of a new high school has some people pretty excited. One man we spoke with said, "I think that it's great that Herriman has grown to the point that we need a high school."

But Jordan School District spokeswoman Melinda Colton says it's not cheap trying to keep up with all the students. She says, "Riverton High, 10 years ago, was about $36 million. As we build the same design out in Herriman, it's costing us $72 million."

The school will be built at 11800 South and 6000 West. It has not been named yet.

It should be finished in two years, which is when Riverton High will have around 3,000 students. That's 500 more than the school was designed for.
