MIDVALE — A family fight ended Monday with a teenager facing serious charges, and his mom in serious condition. Police say the 17-year-old ran over his mother with an SUV when she tried to stop him from leaving their house.

The incident happened at around 5:30 p.m. at a home near 7600 South and 455 East. Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said the teen got into the family’s SUV and when his mom stood in front of the vehicle, he stepped on the gas and ran her over.

But he didn’t stop there.

“(The teen) left out of the cul-de-sac at a high rate of speed, tried to make a right-hand turn but couldn’t negotiate the corner,” Hoyal said. “(He) ended up crossing over both lanes of travel, went up over the curb onto the sidewalk, went through a mailbox and then a light pole, and ultimately crashed into a Chevy Blazer that was parked and unoccupied.”

The teen ran back to his house, passing his injured mom without stopping to help her, Hoyal said. He then turned around and tried to run out of the neighborhood, where he was stopped by police and taken into custody.

The teenager, whose name was not released, could be facing multiple charges, including aggravated assault and hit-and-run.

His 39-year-old mother, who also wasn’t identified by police, was listed in serious condition at an area hospital. She has injuries to her head, neck and arm, Hoyal said.
